Irene in the Foothills, A Portrait Session

Portrait Session

There is a stretch of the Santa Barbara foothills that changes completely in the late afternoon.

The grasses turn pale gold. The mountains soften in the distance. The trails catch the last light of the day, and everything feels a little more open than it did an hour earlier.

That was the setting for this portrait session with Irene.

While these photographs were made during Irene’s final year at UCSB, what interested me most was something simpler: creating portraits that felt relaxed, personal, and connected to the landscape around us.

Irene brought her dog along, which immediately shifted the tone of the session in the best possible way. The photographs became less about posing and more about interaction. One moment she was laughing at something just out of frame, the next she was walking through the grass or sitting on a sun-warmed boulder overlooking the valley.

Those small transitions often become my favorite images.

One of the things I love about portrait photography in Santa Barbara is the variety of environments available within a short drive. The foothills feel especially unique. There is a sense of scale here. The trails wind through open grasslands, the mountains remain visible almost everywhere you look, and the quality of light changes constantly as the sun drops lower.

It’s a landscape that gives people room to settle into themselves.

Portrait sessions don’t have to fit into a single category. They can celebrate a graduation, mark a transition, update a professional portfolio, document a particular season of life, or simply create photographs that feel honest and lasting. The strongest sessions usually begin with a person, a place, and enough time to let something natural happen between them.

Looking back at these photographs, that’s what I still see.

Just Irene, her dog, the foothills, and a California evening doing what it does best.
